Hypnosis for Fibromyalgia

admin —

Research shows that the way we in which focus our attention can have a significant impact on our experience of pain. Because hypnotherapy is a state of focused attention, it can empower you to change the way you pay attention to pain, and your response to pain, so that you can in fact change your pain state.

It is scientifically proven that thoughts, feelings and movements are all factors in either exciting or inhibiting the process of Central Nervous System Sensitization (CNSS), also known as fibromyalgia. If you live with the pain of fibromyalgia it is important to know that the chemicals associated with your thoughts, feelings and emotions either calm down or increase your pain experience.

The way you think about your situation, your pain, yourself, your past and your future … all of it has an effect on your brain and body. And let’s face it, ongoing pain is a highly stressful upsetting state for a person to be in. The catch is that ongoing stress actually contributes to and increases the level of pain and dysfunction in the body.

When we are in the stress response, ‘fight or flight or freeze’, the brain and body perceive we are under threat and all of the body’s systems go into battle mode and protective gear. Pain is actually a protective response by the brain, and although it doesn’t feel like it our brain and body are trying to keep us safe.

So the more you can reduce your own distress with your thinking, the more you will reduce your adrenaline levels and desensitize your nervous system. The more you can generate helpful thinking patterns that engender feelings like security and gratitude, the more ‘feel good’ chemicals and helpful neurotransmitters your brain will create, such as the body’s natural opiates or the happy hormones like serotonin and gaba. The body’s ‘feel good’ chemicals reduce the level of signalling in your pain pathways thereby calming the physical sensations you experience. Over time the body’s systems can learn to recalibrate and you will discover new levels of comfort and empowerment in your body and life.

The body and the subconscious mind are connected; you could say that they are on the same page. For example we blush when we feel embarrassed, we feel butterflies in the tummy or have sweaty palms or racing heart when we think about something that makes us stressed. We have all experienced how these body sensations get turned on instantly in reaction to a thought and emotion.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool that can harness the close link between the body and the subconscious to create beneficial change and healing for you. It opens the way for your brain and body to begin changing the way information is processed which reduces daily average pain levels, improves physical functioning, increases levels of endurance, and enhances emotional wellbeing.

I have been suffering with the chronic pain of Fibromyalgia for 25 years. I have tried and tested numerous methods of coping with the limitations it has placed on my life, both medical and alternative.

Last year I began hypnotherapy with Sarah Ivens. I approach all treatments with an open mind, willing to give all my energy to anything that will relieve my pain. The first session I met with Sarah at her Hypnotherapy clinic in Sydney, but all sessions since then have been on Skype. This works extremely well, providing the necessary closeness without any detrimental effect.

I am finding extraordinary benefits from hypnotherapy.

When my pain is so severe that I can’t function I used to go to bed for a few weeks and just lie there hoping the rest will rejuvenate me. I don’t give in easily. I’m a fighter.

Now I am aware when my pain threatens to overtake my mind and my body that a brief check in will result in restoring my energy and vitality. With the help of my sessions with Sarah and the techniques she has taught me I can feel the pain, say hello to it and then get on with something else. The pain’s still there, but my mind is not fixated on it, so I don’t let it become the only thing of which I am aware at that time.

My spiritual journey is teaching me to stay present every moment of the day and this goes so well with the hypnotherapy techniques.

It’s about changing the way my brain deals with pain signals. If my brain is not totally fixated on the pain signals I am able to focus on something else. This is having an amazing effect on my daily life. It feels like the pain is taking a back seat. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Sarah is very professional and I have confidence in her methods and respect for her knowledge. I’m truly blessed to have found her…
